Press Release
Dance card March 2011
Since June 2010, The Works Dance and Theatre Cornwall, Plymouth Dance and Dance in Devon have been working collaboratively to create and offer the CPD Dance Card scheme. The aim of the Dance Card is to facilitate professional practitioners based in Cornwall, Plymouth or Devon in a particular aspect of their Continuing Professional Development. Practitioners can apply for a maximum award of £250 to support a specific developmental activity such as attending a conference or training course, or receiving mentorship. The new skills or experiences that the successful applicant will gain from their chosen activity need to be of benefit to their work in Cornwall, Plymouth or Devon. Out of 22 grant applications received so far, a total of 14 Dance Card grants have been awarded to date, amounting to a total investment of £3,210 between June 2010 and February 2011.
Successful applicants have been able to undertake a rich variety of professional development opportunities with the support of the dance card scheme. The awardees from June 2010-February 2011 are:
Ava Barron- Attended the International Association of Dance, Medicine and Science Conference
Claudia Caolin- Flamenco workshop and mentorship/private coaching in Spain

Helen Poyner – Somatic movement UK gathering
Caroline Schanche- attended Memory: a two-day conference on Dance and Dementia, Liverpool
Stella Azzura Squadrioni- training Authentic Movement and Therapeutic Presence at the Institute for integrative Bodywork and Movement therapy, UK
There was a sense of affirmation and inspiration from many of the awardees on returning to their home county.
Caroline noted that the Memory conference ‘.....confirmed for me that my own work is of a good quality...and has been valuable to bench mark and critique my own practice and since returning reflect upon the nature of my work’.
Ava says ‘The greatest benefit of the conference was the chance to network with like minded people. It was very educational and inspiring..... I came skipping back to Devon this week very excited, brimming with ideas and already I have pulled down my website ready to re-build with a new brand and mission. I hope to create an ‘umbrella’ for freelance dance scientists; multi disciplinary approach to aid a multi disciplinary art’.
For Jess, ’Working with Yael Flexer and her dancers was an inspiring and valuable experience…. .. incredibly challenging but so enlightening’.
The most recent deadline for Dance Card Bursary applications was Friday 1st April 2011. Successful applicants will be announced soon. For more information please contact your sub regional dance agency by email.
